I’m back at blogging, but it will be mostly discussing what I do during each practice session and that’s that.
Today – scales, scales, scales. D major, primarily descending so I can practice getting my thumb and hand assembly and “plop it down” naturally where I need it. Dan has said my fingers tend to point too far south when I do thumb position, and this exercise is designed to cure that.
Also focused on broad, sweeping bows to really get over my timidness at moving the bow. It’s also how I need to move the bow for the minuet. I can’t insist on the string or put weight on it, since that’s not sporting for Baroque music. Cate Polacek wrote an excellent post on this topic about fourteen months ago.
I’m coming back around to this bowing, too. I’m working on the last bit of Allegro Moderato. The whole thing requires a lot of attention on volume.
