The Suzuki Skeptic points out that the Bach piece “Menuet #3” really isn’t by Bach, but rather by a composer named Christian Petzold.

I’ve been curious about other pieces on the Suzuki list, even those that may be correctly attributed. The first song we learn “French Folk Song” doesn’t help us much to know about it. Applebaum’s “Cello Technique through Beautiful Music, Part I” calls this piece “The Snowman”. Does anybody else know versions of this song?

This is a challenging issue for Suzuki players, since we’d like to know whether we’re playing the original pieces or “dumbed down versions”. We can’t know unless we can track down the original. Sometimes we can live with the simplifications, but it needs to be our choice. If the full piece is too advanced, then at least we can set it as a goal.
