I thought I’d change up the look of the place, as well.
Today was my lesson, and we covered the basics of dynamics using some easier pieces. First, we played our strongest D as an example of forte (for my particular cello) and then we decided how much to back off so that that transition from pianissimo back to forte sounds dramatic. For the softer sections, I need to be short and use the upper half of the bow near the fingerboard practicing a soft sound barely moving the bow at all. My elbow needs to be a bit above my hand.
We also covered releases. Releases need to be timed with the breathing for maximum effect.
Next week, we start the Gavotte in C minor. I’m to start working on it now.
